I just finished reading Octavia Butler's short story, "The Evening and the Morning and the Night." Why have I not read more of her stuff? I read one of her books a few years ago -I think it was "Parable of the Sower"- and enjoyed it immensely, but it was just at the time I was getting heavily into online fandom, and I wasn't reading many books. Butler has a way of taking some not very highly valued quality associated with femininity and raising it up to superpower status. How much do I love that? Lots. I'm a sucker for destiny and secret abilities and world saving and all that, and she brings it for women in a way no one else I've ever read does, not just copying off male writers, but making something new and fresh.

I've started watching Carnivale, now that everyone else has seen it. I'm about halfway through season one, and having very mixed feelings about it.

Today when I was doing the laundry, the two year old wanted to help, which means, of course, that it takes three times as long to do the laundry as it would if he didn't help. There are many little side diversions we have to discuss as we do the laundry, as he looks around the basement and notices more things he wants to hear words about, so that he can learn about the world.

So yesterday I got caught uncomfortably close to what the weather service tells me was a tornado. Me and 5 behavior disordered kids between the ages of 10 and 14 were in the van with my tornado preparedness knowledge, which is like what I've gathered from watching the Wizard of Oz. There weren't any storm cellars around, so, visibility quickly approaching zero, I pulled over and waited it out. I didn't know if we would be safer out of the van, which was rocking alarmingly, but I didn't want to panic the kids, and I was worried about keeping track of them all in the storm if we got out.

It took a while to get home what with all the downed wires and telephone poles and all the debris on the roads after the storm passed, but by the time I got back to town, it just looked like there had been a heavy rain.

Then last night I dreamt that I slept with reynolds wrap and sandwich bags. At least they didn't try to molest me or anything, they just stayed there in their boxes quietly sleeping. Maybe it's a subtle dig about being unprepared, hahaha, IDEK.

Maybe I've been in Spn fandom too long, but this casting call for Season 3 Fringe makes me extremely happy.

I made this little John/Rodney faniction quiz for [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw It was so much fun to go through my old SGA stories. I ended up rereading most of these, and they were just as good as I remembered. How many of them do you remember? Can you match the descriptions to the authors without googling or looking at their journals?

Bonus question: Can you give the titles?

ETA: Don't look at the comments before doing the quiz because some smart asses have already gotten them all and I just posted it less than five minutes ago. Sorry for not screening.

Thanks to my wonderful beta [personal profile] giandujakiss for suggestions which made this a better story, and incidentally gave me food for thought on improving any future stories I write.

[personal profile] lisztful is a new vidder who has been improving rapidly in the short time she's been vidding, and she just made an awesome vid about the amulet and Sam and Dean that just breaks my heart into little tiny pieces every time I watch it. Give a young vidder your eyes for a couple of minutes and check it out if you like that kind of thing. Could be viewed as brotherly love or wincest.

I just made a Supernatural community for posting and reading episode related fanfiction. It's for all Supernatural episode related stories, missing scenes and episode tags. All genres and ratings, all pairings as well as gen, are welcome. Please post your older fic, as well as new material. If you have a desire to read more after seeing an episode, you will be able to search for related stories by episode tag.

There is a similar community on lj, but that one is a Wincest free zone, and I like Wincest.

The comm is called [community profile] episodic_supernatural

The community for the fest is open, and you can find it here. All further info on the fest will be posted to the community. You can join/watch to keep abreast of what is happening, or check the tag feed here.

The official opening for the fest, and actual content posting, begins Monday, April 26, 2010.

Let's get ready to party!!

I have 14,000 words of first time Wincest, in which Sam and Dean adopt a bunch of dogs, in need of a beta. I'd like to get this turned around fairly quickly as I'm about to be very busy with the three weeks for Dreamwidth fest, and I want to use this as my content contribution. Since I told my beta the whole story as I was writing it, it's impossible for her to step back and read it from a distance. I need someone not familiar with the story to give it a read through for continuity and to make sure it makes sense.

Just a few things before I put up the community.

First, enough people expressed concern about the length of time their content would be tied up that Six Weeks for Dreamwidth is now Three Weeks for Dreamwidth.

Tentatively, the start date for the fest is Monday, April 26.

Just to make sure it is clear, anything that you choose to create and offer for this festival is with the understanding that it be posted only on Dreamwidth for three weeks from the date you post it, with the intent of stimulating conversation and connection here at home. After three weeks, you may post the content anywhere you wish. During the time that the festival is running, you are free to post other content anywhere you like, converse and interact with people, and do exactly as you would normally do, except as regards content you have created specifically for the Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Anniversary Festival. Only content created for and entered in this fest must remain on Dreamwidth.

People who are concerned that their content is available by feed. I am not going to worry about it. If you post to Dreamwidth and some people can access that content by feed, that is not a huge deal.

I hope to spotlight some of our communities here, but since it is clear that some people will not want to be involved in this fest, I feel I need your express permission in order to talk about your community. Community maintainers, if you wish to be mentioned on the main festival comm, please let me know in comments, by pm, or anyway you like.

There will be at least one friending meme. We will be using one main comm to link things, and emphasizing posting to existing comms. We will be including both fannish and non fannish content. There will be totally awesome memes in private journals.

Does anyone know if there is a community where we can begin dropping prompts so that people can think about/start working on them? I know of several comms that offer prompts, but are there any that accept prompts? Alternately, I like the idea of an exchange, but only if I have someone else to run it.

Also, about the tag feed. I think a tag feed is a good idea, but I do not feel comfortable pursuing it. Would someone like to volunteer to look into this?

Please, please, unless your dwircle is identical to mine, give me a signal boost. This will not be successful if I can't reach people.

ETA: the festival community is here

As most of you already know, we are approaching the first year anniversary of Dreamwidth's open beta. To celebrate that event, I am thinking about creating a community to oversee a festival which would generate content for our home.

This is not about trying to coerce people into joining Dreamwidth, it's not about posting on lj or any other service about Dreamwidth. It's about making content here, for the people already here, because we have a group of talented people already gathered here and we should have a party for ourselves. If some live journal only people get curious about what's happening over here, they're welcome to come join the fun, of course, but I'm envisioning a party that is by and for people who already love Dreamwidth. Because Dreamwidth is awesome.

I have some ideas about how this might work, but right now it's all still fluid, and I'm open to suggestions. Here's what I have in mind so far:

A central community which I've tentatively called "Six Weeks for Dreamwidth" where people would probably post links, though posting actual content there is not out of the question. Six weeks for Dreamwidth means that participants agree to post their content only on Dreamwidth for six weeks, that is six weeks from the date it is posted. After the six week period is over authors/artists/vidders are free to take their content and post it anywhere they want.

Starting at the beginning of April, as many people as we can interest will start posting content on Dreamwidth comms, or wherever they want on Dreamwidth, and link it on the main comm. Also, as many people as we can interest would start comment fic memes in their personal journals. I would personally like to see some pairing specific memes, because I suspect the percentage of monofannish people on some other journaling services is higher than on dw, and those people might not be so interested in combing through a multifandom thing looking for their pairing, whereas if they should happen to hear there is a meme with just their otp available only on dw, it might make our home more interesting to them, and spark more discussion here.

I'd also love to see a prompting community where people can post prompts without any formal sign ups or obligation to write. I'd like to keep this whole thing as low stress as possible. No real sign ups, just people trying to participate as much as they can given that we are all busy people with lots of other projects. It's a party, not a duty, you see.

ETA: To clarify things a little: I am not saying that participants would restrict their posting of all content to DW for six weeks, or for any period of time. This six week period would only be for works that the participant decided to use for this fest. That would include any comment fic the participant chooses to write for memes which are designated as Six Weeks for Dreamwidth memes. Participants would continue to post other works not written for this fest wherever they liked.
