Continuing on with my New Year's resolution to spend more time writing about the things I love, here is reason #2 that I love Supernatural. The director did not seem invested in reining in Mitch Pileggi's incredible presence when he guest starred on the show, and in fact, allowed Caldwell to put Jensen Ackles in just the position I wanted to see him in.

Take particular note of Ackle's eroticized non-con expression in the close up

Heehee. Oh, yes. No matter how much my affection for this show has waned, Dean's incredibly icky incestuous non-con with both dad and granddad are definetely worth a screencap. *g*

(wow. How sick do we sound? Except... hot!)

Jensen's eyelashes make me crazy.

You know, you pimped me into Supernatural and then abandoned me, forcing me to struggle on alone in this strange incestuous place. What happened??

*laughs* sorry!

Honestly, I didn't like the way they handled Dean's hell stay. That's all. *handwave* It just poured on TOO MUCH, you know? Dean of Season 2 was the most beautifully broken boy I've ever seen in any fandom, ever, but I just don't believe he comes out of years in hell still recognizably himself, much less as well-adjusted as he is. I was squeefully in love with the early season, what with the casting of Castiel, and then that plot twist was like falling off a cliff. I just stopped believing in the character.

But we'll always have Season 2!!!

(Honestly, it's kind of like Ronon- I love him as a character all to itty bitty pieces, but I have a really hard time actually believing in his backstory and also in what a basically well-adjusted, happy guy he ended up only a short year later. So I don't think about it too hard, which I can get away with because he isn't the central character)

Well, you seem to be doing a good job of overcoming your inhibitions so far!

I have quite a few things I don't entirely like but I'm in that infatuated stage where nothing can crush the crush.

I just noticed the way Dean's hand is clutching the chair arm.

*stares*

Yes, I have a lot of love for Season 2.

Hee! not sure how to take that. I'm finding supernatural fandom a bit different than SGA in some interesting ways.

No joke!

SPN fandom can be kind of... claustrophobic. I mean, it's ALL about this one pairing, and this one pairing in incestuous, made up of these two very young guys whose ENTIRE LIVES are wrapped up in each other. There are barely any cracks for other characters to slip in. These two characters are so wrapped up in each other, with no backstory apart from each other, and so few long-term connections to other people, that it can start to feel like the air is getting sucked from the room.

Which is TOTALLY NOT me dissing it. I LOVE that. That "entire lives revolving around each other," "no room for anybody else" vibe is why I buy Sam/Dean, and it doesn't feel healthy because it's NOT healthy, but since when have we ever demanded our boys be healthy?

But after that, SGA was like... this massive blast of fresh air. Dozens of characters! Dozens of pairings! 40 year old characters with marriages and families and job history apart from each other! Characters with actual deep emotional connections (no matter how inept or bizarre) to other people! A whole TEAM, not just a claustrophobic incestuous obsession! It feels so HEALTHY.

Or, that wasn't at all what you meant, in which case I would love to hear.

Overall, I have to agree with your assessment. However, the SGA writers seemed so hell bent on killing the slash that my OTP hardly ever got to share a scene towards the end there. I started losing the love when they insisted on pushing a het pairing I couldn't get into.

I did love the first 3 seasons of SGA. I just felt the m/m interaction was so sparse and so grudging that I'm enjoying the overload of Sam and Dean together in almost every scene, and interacting almost exclusively.

I'm finding the fanfiction reflects the more twisted nature of the show, with lots more darkfic, heavy kink, tragic situations, etc. in Supernatural than in SGA, though of course that's countered by the fluffyness of the huge RPF thing going on. Being an angst lover, I'm having a lot of fun with the Sam/Dean stories. I like my characters broken.

I totally get that- I went from "OMG claustrophobic!" to "whee! fresh air!" while you went from "why can't they even share screentime?" to "together every scene!"

Same observation, but in reverse :)

But yeah- Sam/Dean is SO fucked up and so broken and so wrong that all the fluff has to happen in RPS land. There isn't a lot of room for the wacky fluffy sweet the way there is in SGA. But oh, the angst is good...
