Jannick raised his gun and pointed it at the imposter in Neeva’s body.
“Wait, Jannick, this is me – Neeva. They must have turned off the device,” the woman said.
”Nice try.” Jannick said as he cocked his pistol, but he paused just long enough to be sure before shooting her, or rather, trying to shoot her, because Neeva was up and under his guard, sweeping across the back of his legs and pushing him down.
Neeva snatched the gun out of his hand and couldn’t completely suppress a grin of triumph as she turned it on him. “What the hell do you think you’re doing trying to shoot me?” she asked in mock rage.
“Just that,” Jannick said with an answering grin. “Trying being the important word. I gave you plenty of time to prove yourself.”
“Satisfied?” she asked.
He nodded. “Too bad about Bordal.”
She shrugged. “Back to just you and me, again, Jannick. We’ll survive.”
It was true. Neeva’s people believed that the sole survivor of a culling was charmed, and that no mere human could kill them, or more to the point, they had believed it before they’d been wiped out. He’d never heard anything like that from his own people before the Wraith had taken them, but Neeva had him half convinced that it was true. No one could stop them for long.
