“How do you deal with it?” Elson asked. He had been waiting for an opportunity to talk to Colonel Sheppard alone, leader to leader, but before the Colonel could answer him they were interrupted by Dr. McKay. He didn’t seem anything like the ridiculous man Elson had imagined from Dr. Beckett’s stories when he strode in and grabbed the Colonel’s arm, saying “Go on back to the gate,” as if he were the leader of their group. Some emotion Elson couldn’t identify broke through the Colonel’s stony expression for a moment. “Go on.” It would have sounded like an order if Dr. McKay hadn’t leaned solicitously down over the Colonel’s arm as he spoke, his voice going soft. “Ronon’s waiting outside. Go with him. I’ll be along in a minute.”

The Colonel looked down where Dr. McKay still had a firm grip on his arm and nodded, pulling back and taking his leave without a word. Elson was left alone with the strange doctor who didn’t treat patients staring at him as if they were enemies. “Believe me, you wouldn’t have gotten any absolution from him,” McKay said, not unkindly. “You’ll have to find that from your own people.”

But Elson had to try again. “How does he deal with it?”

McKay gave an unhappy little laugh. “He doesn’t, really, and I expect it will all blow up in our faces someday. In the meantime we do the best we can for him.” McKay shrugged and turned away dismissively. “I’ve got to go.”

Elson had never felt more alone.

I like that the team is there to take care of John when he's shaken up by the things he has to do.

Not that we would be able to tell that by watching the show.

Exactly, but I'll gladly substitute that reality with what you're offering. :/

Once the season is over and I'm not feeling quite as bitter anymore, I think I'll just start pretending that parts of this season hasn't happened at all. Search and Rescue can stay, as can The Shrine (but not the last 30 seconds), but I'll do my best to flush Whispers and Tracker from my memory forever.

Ha! I didn't find the episode at all interesting myself. Thanks for the comment.
