“Bye, Rodney. Wish us luck,” Jennifer called out breezily.

“Good luck,” Rodney said absentmindedly. He glanced up to see her walking away with Ronon. “What do you mean, us?” Rodney asked, not trying to keep the shock out of his voice. He froze, mouth twisting down in that hurt, disappointed expression that came so naturally to him as he watched Ronon stride off jauntily with Jennifer. Jackson gestured impatiently as he slowly forced his attention back to the matter at hand. But after a few minutes the excitement of finding the secret lab and all its mysterious devices allowed him to shrug off his obvious concern about Jennifer and Ronon.

Considering Jackson wasn’t a real scientist, he was surprisingly useful in the lab, and his mind was quicker than most of the people Rodney had to work with. He had a bit of a smug attitude, but it was probably only due to his discomfort at working with someone so much smarter than himself. Jackson was a big fish in his home pond, but here he was in Rodney’s home territory, and that had to be a little daunting.

Jackson leaned back, hands linked over his head, and stretched. “So,” he said. “You like the Colonel as much as he likes you?”

Rodney shrugged without looking away from the screen he was studying. “Mr. Mensa? He’s okay for a grunt.”

Jackson studied him. “Not a topic you want to share about?”

“Nothing to share,” Rodney replied. He shut down his laptop. “I’m going to need some real food about now. Let’s trek down to the mess and refuel.”

They were near the end of the mess line when Colonel Sheppard came in and grabbed a tray. Rodney waved Jackson toward a table. “I’ll be right there,” he said, as he pushed his way back down the line. “Hey, listen,” he said when he reached Sheppard. “Jackson and I have a lot of stuff to talk about. Technical stuff. It would just bore you.”

“Yeah, fine,” Sheppard said brusquely. “I need to talk to Lorne anyway.” He grabbed his nearly empty tray and stalked over to Major Lorne’s table as Rodney rejoined Dr. Jackson.

After four consecutive hours of blissful unconsciousness Rodney hauled himself out of bed and into the bathroom to clean up before heading back to work. They had gone back to Janus’ lab after eating and put in several more hours of work before Jackson had finally admitting to the need for a couple hours of sleep, and Rodney was able to stagger back to his quarters with no loss of face. He felt reasonably alert again, and he wanted to grab some coffee and get back down to the lab before Jackson got there and started messing around alone. But just as he was about to leave, his door opened. Sheppard barreled in, arms folded across his chest and looking obstinate. “Let’s talk,” he said in a drawling, over casual voice jarringly at odds with his body language. .

Rodney ran his hand through his hair and sighed wearily. “I’m about to go back to work, Colonel,” he said. “Let’s do this later, okay?”

Sheppard had dropped his arms loosely and stepped close enough to make Rodney nervous, and when he tried to turn away he grabbed onto his arm to stop him. “Seriously, Colonel,” Rodney said. He tried to pull away but Sheppard didn’t let go. He could hear him breathing. The man was really worked up.

“Why are you doing this?” Sheppard asked.

Rodney’s eyes widened innocently. “Trying to get back to work? Because there’s a lot to do there.”

Sheppard winced as if he’d been struck. “Stop it. Stop with the innocent act. You’ve been avoiding me, plain and simple. Ever since…you know, since you were sick.” He gave Rodney’s arm a little shake. “And you’ve been mean,” and at Rodney’s raised eyebrow, “like, more mean than usual. So talk to me.”

Rodney reached down and removed Sheppard’s hand from his arm. “I’ve just been busy,” he said. “Jennifer and I-” That elicited another wince from Sheppard, and Rodney felt a surge of sympathy he couldn’t afford to indulge. “Don’t do this, okay?” He’d been trying to keep his voice reasonable and polite, but it went soft and intimate in exactly the way he’d planned not to. Sheppard felt it immediately and stepped even closer, his hand coming back onto Rodney’s forearm as if it was made to be there, and Sheppard leaned, broadcasting his intent and making Rodney stumble in his haste to back off, to stop this from going any further down a road that would just result in Sheppard’s humiliation. Sheppard finally seemed to get the message and stopped advancing, but he looked so openly devastated that Rodney found he could hardly stand it.

“Look, Sheppard, how many times do we need to go down this road? I almost got married not that long ago, remember? I thought we had this settled.”

“Yeah, yeah, sorry.”

Sheppard looked like hell, and Rodney had no reason to feel guilty about that at all. He threw his hands up as much with the intent of putting some space between them as to express his exasperation. “What do you want from me? Straight person here, I can’t change that anymore than you can change what you, you know, what you are.”

Now he’d pissed Sheppard off, which was arguably better than hurting his precious feelings. Sheppard put his own hands up, palms out. “Okay, I said I was sorry, I won’t bother you anymore.”

“Well….well good,” Rodney said. He turned away, fiddling awkwardly with his jacket and trying to think of something else to say. He didn’t mean to sound so bald and cold, but he couldn’t find any better way to do this. Best to just get through it as quickly as possible. “Sheppard, I have work to do.”

‘Yeah, okay,” Sheppard said, but he didn’t move aside or leave or anything. He just kept standing there looking like he’d forgotten why he was there.

Rodney cleared his throat and stepped around Sheppard. It was bizarre to just leave his own quarters with Sheppard still standing there, but he didn’t know what else to do, and the desire to escape from the overwhelming awkwardness spurred him on. Sheppard would probably appreciate being left alone for a bit, and they could go back to pretending Sheppard didn’t have this thing for him.

He let out the breath he’d been holding as he hurried down the corridor. At least now there could be no further confusion on Sheppard’s part, he thought, as he poured himself a cup of coffee and headed back to Janus’ lab.

*~*

“Rodney, this is Sheppard. Come in. Rodney. ”

“What’s up?” he asked. He kept his voice casual and distracted, but he felt enormously relieved to hear Sheppard’s businesslike voice still calling him Rodney. Sheppard was saying something about them getting out of the lab and before he could process what Sheppard was trying to tell him the strange robots were on them and he wasn’t thinking about anything at all for an indeterminate time.
