Rodney didn’t like visiting people in the infirmary, but Jackson was an okay guy despite the chip on his shoulder, and he didn’t have a lot of friends on Atlantis, so Rodney figured he could take a few minutes to check in on him. Also, it was a good way to avoid Sheppard for a while, just in case things were still a little awkward between them. Taking his leave after a little chit chat, he almost made it back to his quarters safely, but Sheppard pounced on him right outside his door and followed him into his room before he could think of an excuse to get rid of him.
“You okay?”
“I’m fine.” Rodney said. “No torture or anything.”
“I was worried about you.”
And there they were. Sheppard had that longing look again. He couldn’t believe the man still hadn’t given up. “Why do you keep persisting in this?”
Sheppard frowned. “Because I see how you look at me, and I see how you look at Keller. What you say and what you do just don’t jive, Rodney. I think you’re conflicted about what you really want, and if there’s any possibility we could be together, I want it.” He clenched his jaw. “ I don’t think I can keep working with you like this... it just... I don’t think I can keep doing this, so I’ve got nothing to lose here and everything to gain.”
Rodney’s heart dropped. “You can’t work with me?”
“I’m sorry, I’ve tried. I just can’t be this close to you all the time if there’s no chance for me. I need to move on, try to find somebody else, and I can’t do that if we’re together so much. I want you, and I think deep down you want me, too. You’ve been running scared ever since you caught that parasite thing. I think you know you revealed too much there, and you’ve been bending over backwards running after Keller ever since. I just don’t buy it, Rodney.” He palmed Rodney’s cock so suddenly Rodney didn’t have time to block him. It was the first time he’d touched without clearly signaling his intent. “You think I don’t notice this? Your body doesn’t lie.” Rodney pushed him away roughly. He didn’t know what to say. The thought of not being on Sheppard’s team anymore, not being able to hang out with Sheppard at all… he could see Sheppard really meant it. He didn’t know what to do.
This time when Sheppard reached for him, he didn’t back off. He let Sheppard’s arms come around him. “Rodney.” Sheppard was just letting it all hang out and Rodney’s resolve collapsed. He had an armful of John, and he wasn’t after all, made of stone.
“Do you have the slightest idea how hard I’ve been trying to stop this from happening?” he muttered into John’s neck.
Sheppard was tracing his hairline with his mouth, taking little gulps of air that tickled against his neck as his hands stroked roughly down Rodney’s back. “Is it so bad?” he asked. He sounded so wistful.
Rodney snorted. “It’s bad for you, moron. I’ve been doing everything I can, even to the point of dating a botanist for god’s sake, to protect you from all these rumors about us, and I might point out you’ve done absolutely nothing to protect yourself. I mean, you can’t go on a lousy date once in a while?” His own hands were stroking Sheppard’s arms, and he couldn’t keep back a small shiver at the realization that he was really letting this happen, after so many years of denial.
Sheppard pulled back. “You dated Katie because of some stupid rumors? Are you telling me you weren’t really interested in her? You were going to marry her! You-you bought a ring!”
Rodney rolled his eyes. “Of course I wasn’t going to marry her, you idiot. I bought that cheap ass ring to show to you. To get you to back the fuck off. I never intended her to find it. I was going to tell you she turned me down, that she wanted to take things slower. I never thought someone so sweet and nice like Katie would get serious about someone like me. I seriously underestimated my charm there.”
Sheppard’s eyes were almost comically wide. “Does that mean you’re not really interested in Keller?”
Rodney sighed. Sheppard had stopped petting him, and he wasn’t sure how to get him to start again. “I started the Keller thing when Katie broke up with me because I knew the rumors were just going to get worse. She was infatuated with Ronon, remember? I didn’t think she’d pay any attention to me. I didn’t expect Ronon to lose interest in her, but hey, it’s working out okay now. I get to be sad and rejected and everyone is distracted by my little love triangle with Ronon. Didn’t you see how incredibly sad I was when they headed off to the Daedalus together?”
“So you went to all this trouble with Keller just to dispel rumors about your sexuality?”
Rodney shook his head. “You just can’t get it, can you? I couldn’t care less what people make of my sexuality. It’s the rumors about me and you that worry me. Rumors that can hurt you, John. You need to take this seriously.”
“You don’t think this is a little unfair to Ronon?”
“Come on, he’s loving the competition.”
“What about the way you’re toying with Keller?”
I’m toying with her? I don’t think so. Look, Jennifer’s on the adventure of a lifetime and in the last few weeks she’s been basking in more male attention than she’s gotten in her whole life up to this point. She loves playing us off against each other, and she’s way too young to get serious with anyone. Believe me, she isn’t pining away to settle down with me and have my babies.” John grimaced. “But maybe you are,” Rodney said teasingly, and then laughed outright when Sheppard looked worried. “I promise I don’t have any ancient baby making device,” he said.
“Okay, good,” Sheppard said, smothering Rodney’s mocking laugh with his mouth.
Rodney was too busy kissing back to reply, and it was just as he’d feared in his too accurate imagination; kissing John was just too good, and he’d never be able to give it up, no matter what the risk. John shifted his stance, pushing up against Rodney. Rodney finally pulled back with a long hissing sigh, resting their foreheads together for a moment before pressing back for another brief kiss. “We can’t do this now,” he said reluctantly. His hands found their own way to the back of John’s neck, and he couldn’t help but place a small kiss onto the small space framed by his thumbs on that gorgeous neck.
John made a little noise that did nothing to restore Rodney’s self control, but then straightened up, brushing his hands down over his jacket as if he could wipe away his obvious arousal. “Yeah, okay,” he said. “But tonight, you could maybe quit at a decent hour?”
“I think I can manage that,” he said. “It looks like Ronon’s already beating me out with Jennifer, no surprise there, so I can use that rejection as an excuse not to date for a while.”
John shrugged. “We’ll be okay. I’ll try to be careful.” Coming form Colonel ‘risk is my middle name,’ that seemed like a huge concession. Rodney was glad Ronon was young and hot and had a lot more hair than him. He didn’t have to worry about Jennifer. She would definitely pick Ronon over him, and he would be off the hook and free to be with John.
