Summary: Dusty doesn’t know which of the many rumors she’s heard are true.
The first time Dusty saw the military commander of Atlantis, he appeared to find saluting a waste of his extremely limited stores of energy. His lazy return salute was downright surly, and she couldn’t help but be impressed by a man who could look defiant while saluting a subordinate. His glance darted across and past her as if she were translucent, and he sauntered over to another table and sat down across from someone who had to be Ronon Dex. There was a woman sitting next to Dex, presumably Teyla, which meant the fourth person at their table must be the legendary CSO, Dr. Rodney McKay.
Dusty turned her attention back to Dr. Porter, but when she glanced back at the Colonel’s table a moment later, she found him studying her knowingly. She’d been teasing Alison Porter, who was giggling rather adorably at every outrageous thing she could think of saying. The Colonel saw that she had caught him watching and slowly and deliberately turned his gaze back to his own dinner companions. He clearly wasn’t interested in giving her any grief.
There were so many conflicting rumors about the command staff of Atlantis, and particularly about Colonel Sheppard, that Dusty had given up trying to keep it all straight in her head even before she left earth, deciding, as usual, that she would have to trust her own observations and ignore the gossip mill.
****
The story was that Dr. Beckett, the real Dr. Beckett, had died in the line of duty. There were a ton of rumors about his clone, and everything Dusty had learned at the SGC only added to her confusion.
When in doubt, she always fell back on the same strategy. If you presented yourself as not too bright, people would take you at your word. A few clipped words and a gesture or two was all it took to convince people you didn’t have much going on upstairs. That was something Dusty had learned early in life, and it had served her well over and over again. Even in the Stargate program, where two seconds thought should clue you in that no onewas an idiot, people were always ready to underestimate her.
If Beckett had given Major Teldy an opening, she would have been quick to share her “out here far from home no one gives a damn if I’m a dyke” speech to explain why she’d been eager to relocate to the Pegasus galaxy, but even though Dusty agreed with her, it just wasn’t her style. Better to toss off some nonsense about wanting to kill stuff and let Beckett draw his own, hopefully erroneous, conclusions about her.
Turned out a lot of rumors had more than a little truth in them. The one about Colonel Sheppard being totally fearless and more than a bit reckless with his own life was completely true. She wasn’t sure any of them would have made it back alive otherwise.

Atlantis was full of nooks and crannies, and she’d found a nice one after getting back from the team’s disastrous first mission. It was a place where she could sit and relax in solitude, hidden away from everyone. She had dozed off, already accustomed to the constant background sound of the ocean, when she was startled awake by an unusual noise. She peered out of her hiding place. Colonel Sheppard and McKay appeared to be in some sort of scuffle. She tensed for a moment, all the stories about alien possession and replicators who looked just like people running through her mind.
But then the Colonel laughed softly. “Knock it off,” he said, but his tone was teasing, almost indulgent. “I’ve got work to do.”
“Come on. It won’t take me long,” McKay said in the least quiet whisper she’d ever heard. He was laughing, too, and tried unsuccessfully to yank the Colonel along the corridor. Sheppard fell against him with a very un military snort, then suddenly straightened up and shoved McKay against the wall. Dusty tensed, no longer sure what she was seeing, but McKay still looked amused. “Scared of Woolsey?” McKay asked.
“Terrified,” Sheppard answered. He leaned forward and kissed McKay dead on the mouth and Dusty saw McKay’s hands come up to frame Sheppard’s face as she leaned back into her hiding place. This was so not the place to be caught eavesdropping, but there was no way for her to escape now without alerting them to her presence.
“Right here, right now” Sheppard said, his voice thick with lust. His hands went to McKay’s pants and started opening them.
McKay sucked in a loud breath. “John, jesus, John,” His head fell heavily back against the wall as if he would acquiesce, but after a second he seemed to pull himself together and grabbed onto the Colonel, who was halfway to his knees. “John, stop. “ he looked down at the Colonel hungrily. “Look at you,” he said, “You’re so…, god you’re so crazy, get up. This is one of your more brainless ideas.” He hauled the Colonel back to his feet. “Your room is five minutes away. Come on, we can’t do this here, charming though it would be.”
“Right,” the Colonel said, sounding a little vague, but he followed McKay down the corridor readily.
Dusty leaned back in her hiding place to consider what she’d seen. So that was the real Colonel Sheppard. It was one rumor she’d hoped was true. She wondered if she could be as lucky as he was, lucky enough to find someone for herself here, someone who would want to know the real her. She smiled. She already felt more at home than she ever had on earth.
