Watching Rodney, John thought again that it might have been best to move him to new quarters. Keller had objected, though, stating that it would probably help him to keep everything as familiar as possible. John had desisted because he wasn’t sure who the change would or ought to benefit. Just because he found it painful to see Rodney moving uncertainly among all the gadgets that he was losing the ability to understand didn’t mean that it was bothering Rodney.

“I love you, John,” Rodney said in that weirdly sweet, sincere, unRodney like way he’d been speaking lately.

“I know you do, Buddy.” He helped Rodney out of his shirt. He’d volunteered to help Rodney get ready for bed; they’d all noticed that he deteriorated at night only to rebound--not all the way, but partially--in the mornings, and decided to stick close to him in the evenings until he fell asleep.

Rodney leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you for helping me,” he said.

Rodney was fumbling with his pants, and John reached down perfectly innocently to help him, but Rodney grabbed John’s hand and pressed it against his, okay, very hard dick. He snatched his hand away from Rodney’s groin. “Don’t you love me, John?” Rodney asked, and the combination of that little boy lost voice and the blatant sexual advance turned his stomach.

“We don’t love each other that way,” John said. Yeah, he’d thought about it a million times, but not like this, never like this, and he was positive Rodney had never thought about it at all before now. Rodney had pushed his lip out in a little pout and John racked his brain for some way to distract him. “Hey, you know what?” he said. “I think you love Jennifer. And I think she loves you.”

“What?” Rodney’s face was puzzled. “I love….Jennifer?”

“Yeah.”

Rodney nodded his head and bounced a little on the edge of the bed as John helped him into his sleep shirt. “Jennifer takes care of me,” he said. He was quiet for a minute, his face scrunched down in thought. “Is she my mother?” he asked.

John laughed. It sounded a little forced, but Rodney didn’t notice. “No, she’s not your mother.”

“I think she looks like my mother,” Rodney said. He shook his head sadly. “ I think. I can’t remember so good. I’m going to tell Jennifer I love her. Should I? Should I tell her, John?”

“Yeah, I think she’d like that,” John said. “I think it would make her happy. I think it would make you happy, too.” John nodded. He’d been selfishly keeping the whole Jennifer thing to himself since returning from the future, and it was time to face up to it. Rodney was picking at the threads of his shirt, looking down at it as if he didn’t quite recognize it. John leaned over and brushed his lips to the top of Rodney’s bowed head lightly for a moment before straightening up to finish helping him into bed.

Hee! I'm glad you liked it. I'll take any justification I can get.
