Sometimes fandom makes me tired

Okay, let's see if I've gotten this right in my head now. I've learned a lot of things from fandom, so I thought I'd give back by making a list to help people step all over each other better. The lower the number of the type of story that gets you off, the more feminist and morally superior person you are. The higher the number of your favorite type of porn, the more you suck. Some categories overlap and require a bit of interpretation, but I think this does well as an overall outline.

1.Het – yes, baby, if you like het you are number one and win the feminist competition. You have no issues and are totally well adjusted, healthy, not carrying any of those black marks of mental illness so many of the people below you have to deal with. Feel free to ridicule, revile and stomp all over everyone below you.
2.Femslash- you're still okay if this is your thing, because you still love women. Pat yourself on the back.
3.Threesomes and moresomes- as long as there's at least one good woman in the mix, you can rest your conscience. However you might want to ask yourself why you feel you need men to enjoy your porn. You don't want to become dependent on men for anything.
4.Extremely schmoopy vanilla slash- baby you're weak, but at least your heart is in the right place. Just as long as the guys switch it up and you have no preference for top or bottom, cause man, that means you got some internalized misogyny there which everyone above you on this list is utterly free of.
5.General kinks-haha, you're a little strange but you will be tolerated by most of the people who don't read that stuff, though secretly they think you are messed up.
6.BDSM-yeah, you need help. Not only do you hate women, you probably like to beat up on men, too.
7.Watersports- baby you're sick. Hardly anyone in fandom reads this stuff. Er, at least, hardly anyone comments on it.
8.Bestiality-stay in your own comms, okay? We don't want that shit around here.

Does that about cover it? Feel free to go at each other; it's what we're here for, right? We have no larger enemy to fight.

So um, you read some of those posts on slash, feminism, etc. too, huh?

I'm going to re-read number 4 a few times to remind myself that my world view is not universal and sometimes I need to get over myself.

Oops, doing this wrong.

Um--how dare you not support me in all my ideologies!!!!

Don't you know we are all the same? We are all women, and we are all exactly alike, just like Harry Mudd's women in TOS!

This is basically what I've seen as well. Frankly, since they're making me hate women, they might be onto something.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: Maybe this means the het and slash comms will separate again, and I can enjoy my slash in piece. Plus! We're rebels again! Yay!

Okay, seriously--have you ever read much het fic, like stuff written by het-only writers?

I tried a couple of times. I read one story written by one of the bona fide 5 star feminist SGA writers, and she'd done the old Rodney is a woman named Meredith trick. It was a good, well written story, with an interesting premise, and Meredith was so passive in her relationship with John that she was unrecognizable as the woman from the rest of the story.

Then there was the surprise!John/Elizabeth story posted to SGA flashfic, that was like a fifties sitcom in space.

I have read some damn fine femslash, though.

:| They are mixing too much for my taste. I came here for gay porn.

I find it funny too, because in my mind, by not "using" women for my little sexual deviances, I thought I was behaving. All I hear about looking at a woman in a sexual way, I'm stripping her of her power, or I can't see anything other value in her because I'm attracted, so I figured it also applied to fic. Shows me.

Oh, on this note: I was told a lot of the racism/sexism fighting in SGA that for some reason sparked off in the slash half of things [on that one story by someone whose name I forget about the coffee shop?] actually was mostly a reaction to stuff in the het half.

Which would make more sense if I was coherent. Sorry!

Yeah, I've read both her Broken Wings and the Mezzanine AU of it and I like them both a lot. I often do like the het written by slashers. You, for example.

If I read het that pushes my wrong buttons, I react much more negatively than if I read the kind of old school het-encoded slash that pushes my wrong buttons. But that must just be me rationalizing away the fact that I hate all women.

Made a rude Icon. Yes this is the extend of my graphics abilities.

Really, the barista kerfuffle had hidden depths. I can actually see that. I did skim an SGA bigbang that was a civil war era AU. The only real issue with Teyla being black was that she and John had to go to Canada to get married, because of course we never had any racism here.

Ah yes, that scene.

And the way to combat that kind of misogyny in media and the misogyny that does exist in all fandoms, is to bash an entire genre. I read the post that pushed you over the edge on this one, and that person has a serious case of having all the answers.

I could write a list of the reasons why I tend not to write women characters even as minor OCs, and I think I could get to 100 easy before I got to internalized misogyny.

Hidden depths? TBH all I saw was the same people who pulled that shit in DCU pulling it in SGA and then trying it in Merlin and still getting respect from people because the over-all issue is so fucking important to the world I guess.

Excuse me, I'm very very pissed and have been for more than a year.

Ha! Me either! More importantly, I'm not attracted to men and I'm not heterosexual or interested in heterosexual sex, and I can have my own femmeslash so...

No, no--you feel how you feel, that's cool.

The whole thing was before my time, so I know I don't have a good grasp on the undercurrents.

I thought the story in question was fine, and not a useful example for addressing any larger issue, but I'm not sure any single story ever would be useful in talking about a big issue.

Ahh, yeah, no, it was not a good example. That is a recurrent problem - people who are angry over some issue hold it until they explode in some situation where it makes no sense. And because the issue is valid or an emotional one, no one steps in to say, hey, this isn't valid. The people also lose no credibility and get to make the same mistakes over and over.

I've been here since 2000 - Smallville was my first big slash fandom, and man, I don't remember it like this.

well, in real fanlife I've written some fine het. I wonder if that makes me acceptable, or elitist? *laughing*

I think I am glad that I haven't read the posts that started yours, cause I have the feeling that they would have turned my already bad mood positively toxic.

GO KINK LOVERS FOR THE WIN!!!

Ah. Yes. *looks shifty*

Actually, thanks to your reminder, it's now sitting back at the front of my head. Maybe I'll write it tonight!

*hugs*
