I think my bookshelves mostly convey the message "you need more shelves" and "apparently will read anything that stays still long enough."

Context
is "is this a case for - the ponceyness police?"

[personal profile] owlbrigade1 cites this case in point:

Gotham police are at a loss to explain a sudden rise in animal themed costumed weirdos? Surely the explanation is the same as it is for the long standing animal themed weirdos? It is Gotham, it is what they do. People in animal costumes wreaking havoc is practically a city tradition.

Context, to no one's surprise, involves Harley Quinn.

Welcome to Wednesday and time to tackle the thing that has been lurking and needs to be done. What will it be? What is that PITA of a thing? Care to share, we're here for you and will be virtually behind you with all the encouragement you need.

In need of a little challenge to get you to start something? My challenge to you today is to check on the fridge. Depending on your energy levels and time allowance, select what's most appropriate for you. Remember if you do want to break it up or end up having more energy/time that you initially expected, you can always come back and do another step later today (or tomorrow).

Step 1 - Open the fridge and do a quick check for anything out of date and needing to go.
Step 2 - Spend a bit more time and do a thorough check to the back of shelves/bottom of drawers etc and make sure that you've checked everything in there - take mental note of anything that needs using quickly.
Step 3 - Starting with the top shelf, take everything out, lift out the shelf and clean it, dry it, replace it and put back in a more organised fashion - you may at this point realise that some things would ideally be in a different fridge location, whether it can be moved may depend upon there being space in its ideal location.
Step 4 - If you've still got energy/time, repeat with next shelf
Repeat Step 3 if you wish, until all shelves/drawers and the little door shelves have been checked and cleaned. If you can, as you go, wipe down the inside top and walls of the fridge as well with a cloth and some sort of light cleaner to get rid of any lurking invisible unwanted life forms. If you are tackling just a shelf at a time, don't get the top/walls too wet so that no cleaner runs down onto food stored lower in the fridge.

Remember that there is no obligation to do this challenge and also even if you do start it, it doesn't have to be done all in one go - a shelf a day for the week would be just as wonderful if you wanted to tackle it that way.

So with that I shall say goodbye (I'm not back until fairly late tonight, so please do cheer each other along), good luck with whatever you decide to tackle and a reminder that the optional challenge is OPTIONAL and also does not have to be completed as the WHOLE task - step 1 is a success, as is any other step. Look after yourselves, remember to think of your rewards for completing any personal pain in the tuckus tasks and let us know how you get along.

Just a small signal-boost for those who might be interested:

One of my longtime frustrations with the social-networking ecosystem has been the cross-posting situation. Yes, it's fairly easy to set things up so that, when you post here, a link gets posted to Facebook. But the fact is, not too many people follow those links. What I really want is to be able to post here, and automatically copy the post over to there, so folks can read it directly. (I can wish that all my friends were here, but the fact is, Facebook is still the 800-pound gorilla; if it doesn't show up there, most of my friends won't see it.)

So a little while ago, I sat down with IFTTT (which has finally gotten powerful enough), and puzzled out how to do this right. This IFTTT Applet takes your Dreamwidth RSS feed as its input, and requires that you hook IFTTT up to your Facebook account. Given that, whenever you post something to Dreamwidth, it (eventually -- it takes a while) reads that post off your RSS feed, rebuilds the HTML into something that looks acceptable on Facebook (basically, it turns your post into Markdown), and posts it as a status update on Facebook, with a link back to the original DW article.

I can't promise that it's perfect -- it handles the most common HTML, but almost certainly will choke on complicated stuff. But it seems to be a pretty good compromise, and I've been using it successfully for a month or two now.

Here is the source code for the Filter at the heart of that, if anybody wants to take it in hand and enhance it for their own use. For an example of how things get translated, see this DW post and how it looks on Facebook.

Use it as appropriate, and please pass this along to anybody who might care...

Ashley Blewer, an archivist specializing in moving images and a software developer, created a website, "ffmprovisr", to make it easier for you to use the program ffmpeg.
FFmpeg is a powerful tool for manipulating audiovisual files. Unfortunately, it also has a steep learning curve, especially for users unfamiliar with a command line interface. This app helps users through the command generation process so that more people can reap the benefits of FFmpeg.

Each button displays helpful information about how to perform a wide variety of tasks using FFmpeg. To use this site, click on the task you would like to perform. A new window will open up with a sample command and a description of how that command works. You can copy this command and understand how the command works with a breakdown of each of the flags.

FFmpeg is a free, open source tool that works on the command line and lets you do stuff like:
  • Change codecs (transcode)
  • Change formats
  • Filter stuff
  • Create GIFs and thumbnails
  • Normalize/equalize audio
  • Read/extract captions
  • Make test patterns
  • Fix audio that's fallen out of sync
  • Join or split files
  • Play an image sequence

I have used FFmpeg recipes in the past and it's great how much it can do, especially in combination with youtube-dl which makes it easy to download video from a ton of sites -- YouTube, SoundCloud, Vimeo, and many others. I hope other vidders find ffmprovisr helpful in their work!

Hannover wurst appears to be what happens is when you have the question of whether to have sausage or bacon with your breakfast, and you make the obvious-in-retrospect choice of "Both! At the same time!" and make sausage in part out of bacon.

Context, needless to say, is delicious.

Fanlore is recruiting gardeners to help us with Fanlore!

Do you like writing about fandom? Gardeners are editors who work on Fanlore and take additional responsibilities regarding the wiki’s maintenance. In addition to adding content themselves, they make sure text isn’t deleted indiscriminately and tidy up after other editors, to help new content better fit the wiki’s guidelines. They can also participate in internal discussions about Fanlore events, policies, and documentation. No technical experience is required—you just need to know and love Fanlore, both as a user and an editor. If that sounds like you, come and join us!

Apply on the volunteering page! Applications are due 19 July 23:59 UTC
